"As an artist in middle school, you will be required to complete at least five sketchbook assignments every nine weeks. The purpose of a sketchbook is to encourage you to "observe carefully, "use your imagination, and explore ideas and techniques that interest, challenge, and stimulate you. In addition to the required sketchbook assignment, you are encouraged to fill this space with your own work and drawings of your choice (as long as they are appropriate for school). Use your sketchbook as a place to let out your ideas and thoughts through your art."
In addition to your sketchbook assignment, you may be required to complete an artist of the week activity sheet.
Fifth Grade: The due dates of the sketchbooks and 30 DAY CHALLENGE are every other Monday, unless there is no school on Monday. If you are working on the 30 DAY CHALLENGE, you should have 15 assignments completed by midterm and all 30 completed a week before the end of the quarter. I will be checking your progress every other Friday. If there is no school on Monday, your sketchbook assignments are due on Tuesday. To earn 20 points on your artwork, the sketchbook assignment should " meet the following expectations: "
o Only draw on one side of the paper, do not use the back
o Drawing must fill the entire page
o Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, etc. – No paint or markers!
o Drawing must show great attention to detail (no stick figures!)
o All sketchbooks and 30 DAY CHALLENGES should be handed in to me on the due date!'

OBJECT SELF-PORTRAIT: Think of objects, symbols, and colors that reflect your personality and interests. For example, if you are keenly interested in sports, you may draw a volleyball for a head, baseball bats for arms, golf clubs for feet, etc. People who are serene in nature may desire to use cool colors whereas people who are vivacious may wish to implement warm colors in their drawings.
Remember to use value (tints and shades) in your composition to create a three dimensional appearance. |
CUBISM: In 1907, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque founded the Cubist movement. Cubism means trying to draw an object from many angles in one picture using geometrical shapes. For example, in a portrait of a person, Picasso would draw the profile of an nose with a front view of a pair of lips.
Your assignment: you will complete two drawings of yourself. (SELFIE) One will be as realistic as you can draw it, and the second will be in the cubist style. Look at it from many different angles and combine the different angles within the same drawing. Add color and fill two pages of your sketchbook with the two drawings.

Andy Goldsworthy is an environmental and naturalist artist who uses elements found in nature such as leaves, rocks, twigs, snow, etc. to create his artwork. Remember to complete an entire page and write one paragraph about your art.
Use drawing pencils to create 5 - 10 value studies starting with black and going to white. Gray scales should gradually become lighter. After you complete the value study create a blended scale. There should be a smooth transition with no visible vertical lines.
In your study of value, you will create a single subject drawing. (Contour Drawing) Upon completion of your contour drawing, draw linear lines that will break up your contour drawing into interesting shapes. Use your understanding of value to apply a blended gray scale to the various sections.
